I managed to obtain one of Northern Rail’s £1 tickets from Carlisle to Ravenglass and fancied a day riding, walking and filming on La’al Ratty. Then, at the last minute, Northern cancelled the only train for which my ticket was valid (and – yes – the conductor on the later train on which I travelled did question my right to be on that train – can you believe?) so that it was already afternoon when I arrived at Ravenglass.
I will leave the video to tell the rest of the story – a frustrating day but, hopefully, not entirely wasted.

No….Tim, most certainly not a wasted day. You were able to get some beautiful clear video of the local area using your drone and showing us expats views of the Lake District from a different vantage point. Making me kinda homesick!!
Brilliant thanks for sharing this with us ☺️ loved the music 💖🎶 as well suited the occasion ? scenery stunning 💐😍. In the area , love the Ratty line , been there a few times over the years and enjoyed every minute of this fantasic line ? Very impressed. Very best wishes to all the people who keeps this gem 💎 of a railway 🚂 running 💨🎽.
Excellent film showing the Ratty from a different viewpoint. Glad that the railway is running full but sorry there are not more open coaches in the train and do we really still need (did we ever) the awful virus screens restricting the wonderful vistas ?
👍
What fantastic drone footage Tim never seen Ravenglass from the air before love the music too. Thanks for posting, may see you tuesday next (dalesman).
I always think how nice a job that must be, shame you didn’t get a ride though 🙁
A bit of a stupid title. Sounds like you are having a go at the Ratty.
Another excellent video!
Shame you could not get a ticket this time but it looks like you had a good day out anyway. I enjoyed the drone view, it was a good day for that with no mist over the hills. I see the government have chartered WCR to run some trains to London Even they are fed up of the poor performance of Avanti.
Video could not be bettered 🌟 ( notwithstanding your own disappointment )
Marvellous clarity for the station workings and wonderful use of dronie for the all-round views 👌
Soujourn at Ravenglass, thank you Tim 👌
Grand footage again Tim. Shame that some things didn't go to plan. As they say about the best laid plans. Thanks.
I love r&er!
Although disappointing for you Tim it’s good to see the the trains fully loaded. Hope my local narrow gauge the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch are doing as well. Great video really enjoyed it. All the best. Mick.
If you travelled to Ravenglass on Northern but couldn't get a ticket for the R&ER why does the railways own publicity promote travel to the railway by Northern? Don't ask the R&ER – I've tried but they won't answer the question!
Still you made the most of it. God bless you.
Certainly not a wasted day, some great footage and interesting watching the shunting of River Irt from the sheds to the workshops, any day at Ravenglass is a great day, thank you.
One of these days I should do a round trip (from Penrith) including all the Cumbrian coast line. My latest train trip was unexpectedly to Edinburgh last Tuesday for obvious reasons.
Shame you did not get the full day as planned but you got some decent footage for us to be grateful for. I was chasing NG last week on the Isle of Man. Thanks for sharing Brian
Great photography but awful music spoiled it for me……..sorry.
