Hokkaido is really the only comfortable place to visit in the Japanese summer. Although it sometimes reaches temperatures in the high eighties Fahrenheit, it is not humid like in Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto. But Hokkaido is not your typical Japanese sightseeing destination. If you want to see the temples, shrines, and Japanese cultural-related architecture and sights, you need to visit the Japanese “silk road” from Tokyo to Osaka and Kyoto. Hokkaido is like the “Alaska of Japan.” Much smaller in scale than Alaska, but for Japan, it is the last so-called “frontier” in regards to wilderness and open spaces. If you want to see nature and natural sights, eat good food, and meet very nice people, summer Hokkaido may be for you.
