Commodore Matthew C. Perry, who arrived in Japan on the “Black Ships” at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868), was said to have walked on this pathway located in the city of Shimoda in Shizuoka Prefecture. Lined with beautiful willow trees and stone pavements, the rows of Western-style buildings and old houses from the Meiji (1868-1912) and Taisho (1912-1926) periods exude an exotic atmosphere. The area is a popular tourist spot with various antique shops and cafes.
