I really recommend going on one of these boat rides if you visit Iwate. They’re a perfect way to see some of the most beautiful parts of the coast that are otherwise inaccessible. (If you don’t have a drone, this is the only way to see some of these great views!)
The video that I referenced in the video where I hiked the trail that you can see from the boats is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSIy5-9vRCM
The Japanese website for the company that operates these tours is here: https://tanohata-taiken.jp/?page_id=14
Boats rides are by reservation only. So call them at least a day in advance or use their contact for that you can see on the website in the link above.
Prices are 3,800 per person for adults, 3,000 yen for elementary school students. If there’s just one of you and no one else on the boat, it will be 7,600 yen.

The boats turn around just offshore of this landmark: https://goo.gl/maps/dZb7JhHKQ9otNvCKA

Wowwwww wowwwwww
That section of cliffs after the big cliff-face with the heavy fog floating over the tree tops and the emerald sea was so beautiful, plenty of material there for a good photographer (w gimbal?) or a good watercolour artist… Thanks for sharing Quinlan
That was simply stunning.
Breathtaking. Definetly on the "want to visit" list
What an amazing coastline, thank you for sharing. Especially that foggy area.
Iwate was already on my list for my eventual Japan trip (thanks to many of your previous videos), but man this looks like such a fun way to experience that coast!
Wow, wow, wow is right! What incredible scenery! The cliffs and caves at Tanohato are breathtaking! The color of the water is beautiful. Wish you could have seen inside the caves but maybe next time. The Sanriku coast trail is already on my list and if the weather is good this would be an exciting thing to do. The "elephant" is fun! I love it when you make your coastal vlogs. Thank you so much Quinlan. Beautiful job on this vlog!
magical
That shot at 7:00 is to die for I have to go see this for my self!
美しいい… I would gladly watch an hour of this scenery happily even without commentary. List of places I need to visit keeps getting longer.
Considering your idea of a long-form cliffs video. You could always create a "non-copyright foggy cliffs+sounds to chill to" mix if you ever felt like it. Alternatively you could launch your own line of gorgeous Japanese nature phone/computer backgrounds and screensavers. This is the first time I've seen that "elephant rock", that was cool.
What stunning scenery! I am sure it’s even more impressive in person but watching the video means no sea sickness 😅
Stunning video
Looks like a great kayak spot as well! Loving these profiles on fun coastal activities up in Iwate – keep it up!
Amazing! Thanks for the ride
Insanely beautiful I would love to watch an hour of this 😍 also unbelievable how affordable this is I remember loving your hiking video would love to see this area of Japan one day
I usually would never get on a boat except for fishing, but I might be tempted to get on the boat just to see all of that wow wow wow!!!! Thank you for sharing!
These immense rocky cliffs jutting abruptly into the ocean remind me of Dōgashima in Kamakura but dialed up to 11 🪨🔥
Looked like a nice boat tour along an area that that isn't normally seen.
With all the natural caves, have to wonder if any were used by the Wōkòu. To my knowledge, they were mostly based in southern and western Japan where trade routes from China and Korea would be easier targets.
Quinlan, you communicate your awe and wonder with infectious enthusiasm! My wife and I were gasping with every turn around a corner on the water. How beautiful!
That really is pretty. I'd like to see it in person since the wide angle lens makes it look less than 200m high.
Amazing views. This should have so many more views!! Know that your viewers really appreciate the work you put into creating.
Incredible, great video, as always! This video will have to be enough for me though, as I think I'd be barfing over the side of the boat the entire time lol
If I can ever get to Japan again, that's definitely a view and experience worth going out of the way for! Thanks again for sharing this with us! I doubt we would be able to research enough to know that we could see it like this 😊
Very cool! And this would be accessible to my non-hiking partner as well!
What an amazing looking area. From the green and browns of the cliffs to that incredible blue of the water. Talking of the water, are there any diving groups that are in the area?? The underwater landscape would be of the scale.
I was thinking I'd probably get sea sick but I think it is worth the risk. Definitely going North the next time we're in Japan.
Such a stunning coastline!! It's so architectural if that makes sense, and all the pine trees edging the cliffs look so beautiful and so Japanese. I love coastal communities, so if you ever do a video about some of the little fishing villages along there, their customs, local dishes, local stories etc I'd be super grateful. Thanks again for showcasing such a beautiful part of Japan.
Oh that's so beautiful! Tough I'm getting seasick just watching the tiny boats 😉
Awesome!
I have seen a lot of Japanese watercolour landscapes and thought there was some level of exaggeration…I now know I was wrong..
Incredible! I can’t do the climbing or more arduous hiking you do. I have physical disabilities that prevent that but I can do “tame” hikes. So, going around the coast by boat is definitely more my speed. And look at the enjoyment of it!
At about the 7:11 time, there is a white “figure” in the rock. It’s standing guard! I’m sure the whiteness is from weathering or perhaps just the rock face’s myriad of colors & formations. But it’s fitting there would be guardians here.
🙏🙏
QUINLAN , THAT'S AN AWESOME BOAT TRIP . I REALLY ENJOYED IT .
Thats amazing
Absolutely amazing. I love Iwate🤩🤩🤩🤩
Just got back from 3 weeks of the mct trail. Weather, absolutely abysmal, but the tanohata area was some of my favorite section. It really is such a beautiful area, and everyone was so welcoming.
Best thing to cure sea sickness after you been out is to go straight back out again or so they say 😉
The quality is so good !!
Ah, very nice. I had this (and a similar cruise at Jodogahama beach) on my todo for 2019; however, I cancelled my Sanriku trip due to the impacts of Typhoon 19/Hagibis (and then, well….<waves hand around>). Hopefully soon I can experience it. How accommodating are they to people with limited Japanese? (I could see some concerns in case of emergency, etc.)
I want to know why you didn’t go fishing? Also, how much for that little adventure? (Nevermind! I didn’t finish the video when I started replying). You’re awesome Quinlan!
Love your videos Quinlan! Keep them coming. Would love to meet up next time I’m back in Japan!
