Japan Travel: Sagano Scenic Railway nostalgic trokko train, Kyoto52,Japan
The Sagano Scenic Railway (also known as the Sagano Romantic Train or Sagano Torokko) is a sightseeing train line that runs alongside of the Hozugawa River between Arashiyama and Kameoka. Its charming, old fashioned trains wind their way through the mountains at a relatively low speed, which is a journey of seven kilometer distance for about 25 minutes, so that the passengers can enjoy a pleasant view of the scenery while they travel from Arashiyama through the forested gorge and into rural Kameoka.
It was originally part of the JR Sanin Line before it was replaced by a faster, straighter route in 1989. Then, the railway route of this scenic area was preserved and outfitted with nostalgic trains featuring wooden benches. The views seen along the line change each season, and the train is particularly popular during the autumn color season from mid November to early December when the color of leaves along the gorge turned into the autumn color. Trains are not in service in winter from December 31 to the end of February.
