This temple is said to have been founded in the Nara period, standing near the summit at an altitude of about 500 meters overlooking the Saijo Basin. At the end of the Heian period, it is said to have been the stage of the battle between the Genji and Taira clan.
Built in the 15th century, the zushi and shumidan in the main hall are designated as national important cultural properties, and are large and colorful. It is believed to have been donated by the Ouchi clan of Yamaguchi who built Kagamiyama Castle, and letters from Emperor Godaigo and Mori Terumoto have also been handed down.
In the precincts, there are huge trees such as Meotosugi, which is about 40 meters high and estimated to be hundreds of years old, horse chestnut, and mokkoku, and are designated as natural monuments of the prefecture. In addition, about 60 kinds of 1,400 rhododendrons have been planted, and from late April to early May, rhododendrons of various colors are in full bloom, and commemorative tree planting is also held for a fee. Hiroshima University Higashi-Hiroshima Astronomical Observatory and a plaza are also nearby.
