When it comes to downsized living, Tokyo has it all. Known for its capsule hotels and compact prefabs, now the city boasts 9.46-square-meter apartments. What the rooms lack in space, however, is made up for in height — ceiling of the apartments can be up to 3.6 meters high, with windows letting in plenty of light. “So far it’s been comfortable. I keep my belongings to a bare minimum, and it’s easy to get around since everything is literally within arm’s reach,” says Sotaro Ito, an occupant of one these minuscule accommodations. These cleverly designed small apartments target young professionals who are happy to forgo floor space in exchange for affordable rent and inner city convenience.
