Sapporo’s “Clock Tower” (Tokei-dai) is one of the most famous icons in Sapporo for tourists to visit. This is the original building where the Sapporo Agricultural College was first established by an American, Dr. William Smith Clark, in 1876. This college is the origin of present-day Hokkaido University. This clock tower building is the oldest building standing in Sapporo, and the oldest clock tower in Japan. Presently, the first and second floors are a public museum that introduces the development of the Sapporo Agricultural College and the growth of Sapporo. The actual clock itself continues to run and tell time accurately since it was established in 1881.
