Altezza is the better buy. 2JZ is reliable and has tons of potential (duh)

Altezza but mainly because they’re cheaper and more available. But your gonna want to do some work.
The engines not great it’s good but it’s not great, it’s much better with a turbo but it will never be the 1jzgte in the chaser without enormous investment.
The throttle body and specifically the vvti solenoids are a popular fail
The gearbox is glass so it will fail speaking of the j160 6sp manual and the diffs can be temperamental also.
Finally if you wanna do some drifting your gonna mow through power steering pumps on the regular if you’re a full send kinda character. They don’t like been thrown from full lock to full lock.
Good news both 1j and 2j will fit needing very little modification with parts from the wagon I’m told specifically the front subframe. But getting the gte variant of either will cost… so far in the groups I’ve seen 1j swaps, 2j swaps, rb25 swaps, sr20 swaps, 1uz swaps and I’ve heard rumblings a local yokel is working on a kswap.
The inside track there is the key complaint with this car is the 3sge although the other options 1g,2j actually amount to worse.
I like mine would recommend but it’s getting a 1uz the sound that 3s makes is truly a hate crime.
Edit: i forgot… good luck with the stock clutch/dual mass flywheel set up… drives like a sack of wet sand.

Which ever fits your budget.
Chaser will always be better than an Altezza unless you drop serious coin into the Altezza. Even then the Chaser will be $5k away from being better.
