When I was in Sapporo last month, I went to Nijo Fish Market in Sapporo searching for a restaurant to try a fresh seafood donburi (rice bowl). I found a hole-in-the-wall shop that was down a dark and dingy hallway. If this was the US, I would not go down such a badly lit hallway area. But fortunately, this is Japan and I followed a young Japanese guy who seemed to know where he was going. I found out he was also just exploring and after he came across the shop, he left, but I stayed. It was called Sakanaya no Daidokoro which translates to something like “Fishmonger’s Kitchen.” They had various sets of combinations of the various fresh seafood like uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe), hotate (scallops), amae ebi (sweet shrimp), maguro (tuna), etc. I chose the salmon, salmon roe, and scallops donburi. It was not a large portion, but it was satisfying, fresh, and delicious. #shorts
