Wow, fascinating stuff. Some real history there. Great to see Len Beadell represented in the mural. A lot more out there than I would have imagined.
Great job Justin, an impressive piece on Maralinga.
Cheers for that, felt like I have now visited the place. 👍
Loved this. Great stuff with the drones! And that airstrip is massive!!
Now I can now see what Alan Parkinson was referring to in his book 'Maralinga' Australia's Nuclear Waste Cover-up when he talks about these submarine doors.
Do you have any photos? Have been after a few photos of the airstrip and the building that's there… working on some scenery for Flight Sim/ Prepar3d.
It’s very hard to measure plutonium contamination directly since it is an alpha particle emitter (alpha particles are stopped by a few centimeters of air or a thin layer of another material). The best way to detect it is by proxy with specialized equipment that can pick up the low energy gamma rays emitted by a contaminant associated with the plutonium (Americium 241). A regular geiger counter won’t detect these substances easily (especially from any distance). It can more easily detect the remaining fallout from the nuclear explosions since the fallout is composed of radioisotopes that emit easily detectable higher energy gamma rays and beta particles (for example Cesium 137).
Great video, thanks. Dad was there for a number of these tests in the 50s. He would have witnessed Taranaki, amongst others. I would like to go there one day.
wow!

I remember meeting and talking with Len Beadell as he help build the famous gun barrel highway, he lived in Elizabeth South Aust. he was a very interesting man. great talker.
If I'd have been walking around the place I'd have taken both a beta gamma and an alpha monitor with me and check anything before I touched it as well as checking my shoes and clothing before I left.
Disgusting the contempt for the local people. Britain needs the bomb; Australia can suffer.
