Adventures not only involve new places but new foods. And one of our favorite things is raw oysters! We eat raw oysters often. We usually get them when we are down visiting my parents in the Hampton Roads Chesapeake area in the south eastern corner of Virginia. If you know the right places you can get them from fisherman right off the boats. In this case we got them from a guy in central Virginia who is from the peninsula and ran down for some fresh seafood the night before. He had about a bushel of oysters that came straight out of the creek and still had mud on them. We got about 20 oysters if you count all the small ones for $10. Not a bad deal at all. In this video we will show you how-to shuck and explain how you may run into a bad oyster even in the best batch. We also find a couple pee crabs along the way. Many oysters in the area are named by the creaks they come out of and most are tributaries of the rappahannock and james rivers. Part of adventure is adventurous foods! In during your overlanding & expedition excursions if you find yourself anywhere near the chesapeake bay during the cooler months seek out some local oysters, crabs, and clams!
