Otagi Nenbutsuji (愛宕念仏寺) is one of Kyoto’s lesser known Arashiyama jewels, mostly overlooked by the tourist hordes.
Actually, it is refreshingly different than many other temples, in that it has 1200 Rakan (羅漢) or followers of Buddha, all recently made and with unique, happy, humorous, and whimsical faces. You might see scores of Kyoto temples that blur together in temple burnout – but this is one place you will always remember clearly.
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is at the end of Arashiyama, but sadly many tourists miss it. That said, with a flood of tourists in Kyoto getting worse every year, this is one of the places you can escape the tourist mobs and still enjoy a tranquil and peaceful temple.
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is open 8 AM-5 PM (last entry 4:45 PM). Entrance fee is ¥300. To get there by bus, board the #62 , 72, 92 or 94 bus at the JR Saga Arashiyama Stn South Exit or Hankyu Arashiyama Stn and get off at the Otagidera Mae stop. For those who are fit, however, it is within walking distance.
