Even though Japan will no longer require inbound tourists to join a group package tour there are many problems that arise.

Self guided tours without the need of a tour guide will start as from 7th September in Japan. However, self-guided tours need to be planned with Japanese tour agencies and flights need to be booked by them too meaning a HUGE problem arises for foreign tourists.

This video is a different style of video, less edited more raw where I vent my frustrations about some of these rules and suggest some fixes so that people can finally enter Japan for Tourism.

  1. Many travel agents have complained with the authorities. New government regulations state that "travel agencies are obliged to book both air tickets and accommodation, but most travel agencies cannot book flights departing from overseas. JATA (Japan Travel Agency Association) will hold an online meeting tomorrow about this nonsense rule.

  2. Japan will never open 😪
    Greetings from Korea 🇰🇷 💕 ❤️ 😊
That typhoon is hitting jeju island
Where i live at this moment 😄

  3. Thank you for your insights, appreciate this. Can you also discuss the vaccine requirements wherein Sinovac, which was jabbed to millions or billions of people, shall be accepted as it is already accepted and recognized by WHO, US and many EU countries. Thank you.

  4. Hi Nathan! Thanks for making this video and highlighting the difficulties with the new rules. No, I don't think you misunderstood the rules. While the rules are not 100% clear, my own inquiries seem to indicate that most legitimate, Japan-licensed tour agencies will not issue the required ERFS certificate unless they book the flights and all accommodations. Some companies online are offering an ERFS for a large fee (upwards of $200!) and telling their clients to either wing it with the visa/eVisa application, or to "just tell" the authorities that said company did indeed book flights/accommodations when they didn't, or just booking a single night's stay or day tour, or something similar, which is anyone's guess whether that will pass muster with the visa officials. What a mess.
I'm in the same boat as many of your subscribers; I booked flights and accommodations way, way back in Oct 2019 for an April 2020 trip, and have had to reschedule for the most part some five times now because the rules for refunds, cancellations, etc for my flight and Airbnb were not so permissive when I booked, and am now supposed to be going in mid-November. I'm therefore kind of locked into my arrangements and almost forced to run the hamster wheel of rebooking instead of cancelling if I want to avoid losing a decent portion of the money I spent on the original package. At this point, unless Japan makes an announcement soon about some sort of timeline as to when relatively free travel for individual tourists will resume, I might just pull the plug on Japan altogether, bite the bullet on some money, and just take my tourist dollars to South Korea, where all you need for entry for the most part is an easy online authorization, and that's it. I know that the Japanese government's decision making is complicated and subject to cultural pressures, but I thought that, after Abe, it was an LDP priority to promote tourism? It almost seems that international tourism is very low on the priority list at the moment.

  5. I’ve got flights and hotels booked for a trip at the end of October and November. The flights are on air miles (used because they are flexible, which is ultimately the only way to do it at the moment when it comes to Japan, and I’ve moved them three times now). So it looks like I’m ineligible. Unless anything changes in next couple of weeks I’ll be cancelling. It’s so disappointing, this was going to be my big post-COVID trip that I’ve been excited for for literally years now, but some other country will get my cash now, since I’m tired of all the disappointment.

  6. I'm just going to go to Korea. The Korean Won is remarkably low at the moment and winter travel is not as popular so prices aren't crazy. I think Japan will just keep down this path of silly restrictions and even if they opened by Christmas the number of people waiting to rebook or book trips will drive up prices. I'll check Japan in 2024.

  7. I'm literally going to have to cancel this trip for the third time if they don't open by October 21st.

  8. I have seen a website of a Japanese travel agency offering their help for the obtention of an erfs certificate for around 200 eur! This is abusive and should be not allowed.

  9. When this all began someone asked me when I thought Japan would reopen. Back then I said 2025…jokingly…with the snail’s pace the Japanese government is taking, I’m not sure if I might be right at least in regards to things being the way they once were.

  10. Japan Tourism Agency (A part of Japanese government ministry) will anounce the updated policy in their website about airline booking and hotel booking by midnight today.

  11. Just lacks logic, the whole plan. Have tickets for end of march which is when we tried to go last year aswell. Please it really isnt hard look at all other G7 nations.

  12. I love Japan and would love to go, but I won't be going as long as Japan keeps all these restrictions which basically holds you back from truely enjoying Japan. WE WANT TRIPS WITH FREEDOM!

  13. Very awesome 😎

  14. KLM have refused to change my dates anymore and because I booked my ticket in February 2022, I can't get a refund either 😠 I'm so disappointed in Japan and their bad decisions 😔

  15. Eloquently and cogently stated Nathan! As someone who knows Japan from birth, I know the best way is international political pressure for these entry policies to change. What happened to the Italian CEO of GoGo Nihon? He was effective in garnering political attention with that petition. Is he not helping in this effort now that he has students flooding in giving him booming business? Would you consider creating a travel tourism business in Japan for English and Spanish speakers? Cheers.

  16. For the past 7 years, my family and I have repeatedly go back to Japan every year for our family's yearend holidays. However, now with the new ruling, which is a lot more hassle and more expensive, we are going to Korea instead. Why would I want to pay extra fees to the tour agencies where I can do the bookings myself for a lot less. The Japanese government thinks that we tourist are so hard up to visit Japan and spend our tourist dollars there. Japan may have the "SUN" on their flag but the world certainly do not revolves around Japan. 2022 December…KOREA here we come!!!!!!!
