Manila has been an amazing city to explore, but there is a whole other side to it which we were very excited to experience, the history of Manila!

We started our day by visiting Jose Rizal Park (Luneta Park) and learning a bit more about him and so many others like him who helped mould The Philippines so many people know and love! His influence on Filipino culture and the country itself are huge and this park dedicated to him is was a fitting tribute to such an important figure.

After this, we went to visit the ‘Old Manila’ – the walled city of Intramuros. We got to see some amazing architecture behind the walls, and visit some it’s iconic landmarks such as :

• San Agustin Church
• Manila Cathedral
• Fort Santiago

This was a great adventure and a very different insight into Manila’s history, we don’t feel as many tourists appreciate this side of Manila and really hope people watching this video will be adding it to their itinerary for their upcoming trip to The Philippines!

  1. Wow, you're the first foreign vloggers i've seen who actually researched about Dr. Jose Rizal before coming here. Bravo. i've actually been educating some vloggers about him, so i'm glad you already know much about him and his significance to our history 🙂

7:40 – That's the Rizal Monument. It has his skeletal remains beneath it and is guarded continuously by the Philippine Marines Corp. as you saw. Rizal was actually executed there in Luneta (formerly called Bagumbayan in his time) by firing squad for the crime of rebellion. And I believe his vertebra, the one that got hit by the bullet when he was executed, is also on display at the Rizal Shrine at Fort Santiago. I'm just not sure if it's still there.

Jose Rizal was also a doctor (Opthalmologist) and a polyglot. He has numerous monuments and memorials both here and abroad, including London at the Beckett family residence where Rizal stayed one time.
Maybe try to visit also the Bonifacio Shrine near Manila City Hall. Andres Bonifacio is another one of our national heroes and is called the 'Father of the Philippine Revolution.' (Rizal wasn't directly involved in the revolution against Spain, but his novels – Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo – are often cited as part of the inspiration for the revolution. It was Bonifacio who spearheaded the establishment of the secret revolutionary movement "Katipunan".) If you go to BGC (Bonifacio Global City), atleast you now have an idea who it's named after. 🙂
