ABOUT AACHEN POND:
green oasis in the middle of the city on the water: The Aachener Weiher and the surrounding meadows near the university are among the most popular meeting places in Cologne. The four-hectare body of water is located right next to the Museum of East Asian Art in the inner green belt. Aachener Straße, which gave the building its name, runs just a few meters away.

This arterial road already existed in Roman times. The pond of the same name, on the other hand, was not created until the early 1920s, when Konrad Adenauer was mayor of Cologne.

As in all park ponds, swimming is not permitted in the artificial body of water. Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park, which has only been officially called that since 2004, stretches south of the pond to Bachemer Straße. Members of the Cologne Peace Forum had campaigned for this name to commemorate the atomic bombing of Japan in 1945.

The park with gentle hills was created after the Second World War: rubble and rubble from the destroyed city were heaped up there. The people of Cologne first called this green area “Mont Klamott” or “Aachener Berg”.

In the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park and at the Aachener Weiher it gets really crowded on nice days. Young people in particular, including many students from the nearby university, have a great time here sunbathing, barbecuing and chatting. There is a small playground for children in the park. After work, the people of Cologne like to meet in the large beer garden by the pond
