Omiya is a major station with 5 different shinkansens to use. The Tohoku & Hokkaido Shinkansen as well as the Yamagata, Joetsu, Hokuriku, and Akita shinkansens.
So it’s a convenient stop back to Tokyo when you travel to one of Japan’s northern regions.
