Akechi Mitsuhide is a small festival held on May 3rd in Kameoka with a samurai parade, taiko drumming, and gun demonstration. Akechi Mitsuhide (1528-1582) was a samurai who joined the warlord Oda Nobunaga in his quest to unify Japan. Akechi took over the Tamba region and built a castle in Kameoka in 1577.
In 1582 he led an army from there to attack and kill his lord. There are several theories as to why the most popular being that he was avenging personal insults and the death of his mother which Oda Nobunaga was responsible for causing. This act earned Akechi Mitsuhide eternal infamy but in Kameoka they like him and put on this festival for him every year.

I used to play a game called samurai warriors and it was based on this part of Japanese history. Mitsuhide Akechi was my favorite character.
Interesting. The marchers remind me of a Veterans' Day parade, the way they shamble by.
Hey Dave, Thanks once again for sharing the good stuff.
In the anime Hyoughe Mono there's a really touching scene where Akechi is being sieged by Hideyoshi, and their food supplies have run out. Akechi and his generals decide to have one last feast together eating left-over miso soup and adding some chopped up rope. By the end they've all realized that no banquet could ever be as valuable as their bonds of friendship, the generals refuse to let Akechi commit seppuku and hold the castle while he tries to escape. Episode 14 if anyone's interested.
I also heard Nobunaga committed sepukku at Honnoji and his body was pretty much incinerated in the fire. Still hard to believe such a cunning samurai lord didn't see it coming.
Toranaga: There is NO excuse for betraying your liege lord!
Blackthorne: There is if you WIN!
Toranaga: (laughing) Quite right. That is the one excuse.
great video and interesting festival 😉

Akechi Mitsuhide was my ancestor. My mother's family in Japan still has the Cherry Blossom Mon on their graves. Really interesting to hear my mother tell the story.
