This time I will be walking in Arashiyama, a tourist area in the western part of Kyoto City.
Arashiyama is famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, and has been selected as one of the 100 best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan and one of the 100 best autumn leaf viewing spots in Japan. Arashiyama has been a representative tourist destination in Kyoto since it became a vacation spot for aristocrats in the Heian period (794-1185).
The Togetsu Bridge over the Katsura River, which runs through the center of Arashiyama, has become a symbol of Arashiyama and is particularly famous.
Kyoto City has a population of 1.47 million, is divided into 11 administrative districts, and is called the “Ancient Capital” because it has been the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years.
From the Heian Period to the early Edo Period, Kyoto was the largest city in Japan, and its urban area was called “Rakuchu.
Commerce and industry among city residents have developed in Kyoto since ancient times, and especially during the Edo period (1603-1867), when domestic distribution flourished, Kyoto became an industrial city that shipped products throughout Japan.

今回は、京都市西部にある観光地嵐山を歩きます。
嵐山は桜や紅葉の名所として有名で、日本さくら名所100選並びに日本紅葉の名所100選に選定されています。平安時代に貴族の別荘地となって以来、嵐山は京都の代表的な観光地となっています。
嵐山の中心部を流れる桂川にかかる渡月橋は嵐山の象徴になっており、特に有名です。
京都市は人口147万人、11の行政区に分かれており、1000年以上にわたって日本の首都とされていた事から、「古都」と呼ばれています。
平安時代から江戸時代前期までは日本最大の都市であり、その市街地は「洛中」と呼ばれていました。
京都では古来から都市生活者向けの商工業が発達し、特に国内流通が活発化した江戸時代には、全国に製品を出荷する工業都市としての役割を果たしています。
現在も、京セラ・島津製作所・オムロン・日本電産など先端技術を持つ企業をはじめ、任天堂・京都アニメーションなど業界トップクラスの本社が集まり、現代産業を支えている地域の一つになっています。京都市は国際観光文化都市に指定され、旧市街地を中心に建物の高さ規制や広告表示の制限があり、古い街並みが保全されています。
さらに、旧帝国大学の京都大学をはじめとする多数の大学が集積し、国内外から学生や研究者が集まる日本有数の学生街・学園都市としても知られています。
