In this very special episode, we are visiting a Balkar family, to learn about their unique history, culture and delicious food!

The Balkar people come from Kabardino-Balkaria, in the Caucasus. Under Stalin’s regime, the Balkars were repressed and exiled from their homelands, under false accusations of collaborating with German forces. Tens of thousands of Balkars were forced from their homes in a matter of 2 hours, and placed on an animal train bound for different countries like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, thousands of kilometres away. Unfortunately, due to the extreme conditions of the journey, many Balkars died before arriving.

We went to Frunze village outside of Karakol, where a small community of Balkars live. We were welcomed in by Luba and her family, where she sat down with us and told us stories of her parents coming from Kabardino-Balkaria, the struggles they faced, and what life is like for them now. Luba also gave us a tour around her home to see her garden full of fresh apples and produce, her workshop where she makes traditional scarves and clothing from wool and silk, and her family showed us their traditional dance known as Lezginka.

Today, the Balkar family is making one of the most traditional dish of Caucasus – Khychin. This is a flattened dough stuffed with different ingredients (meat, potatoes, homemade cheese), pan fried and smothered in butter. The homemade cheese inside the Khychin is Bryndza, fresh sheep’s milk cheese. They also prepared Ayran with crushed wheat, a very unique drink originating from times when food was scarce. Tea with desserts, jams and honey were also served while we enjoyed the delicious food!

This was a special experience for us learning about this minority community living in Kyrgyzstan. We would like to thank Luba and her family for welcoming us into their home and allowing us to catch a glimpse into their lives.
