The Vieux Lyon is the largest Renaissance district of Lyon. In 1964, Vieux-Lyon, the city’s oldest district, became the first site in France to be protected under the Malraux law to protect France’s cultural sites. Covering an area of 424 hectares between the Fourvière hill and the river Saône, it is one of Europe’s most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods. There are three distinct sections: Saint Jean, Saint Paul and Saint Georges. In 1998, Vieux Lyon was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other districts in Lyon because of its historical importance and architecture.

Lyon is a commune in the rhône-eastern France, France. Seat of the council of the metropolis of LyonNote , to which its special status confers both the attributions of a metropolis and a department, it is also the capital of the arrondissement of Lyon, that of the departmental constituency of the Rhône and that of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are called Lyonnais.

The commune has a location as a geographical crossroads of the country, north of the Rhone corridor that runs from Lyon to Marseille. Located between the Massif Central to the west and the Alpine massif to the east, the city of Lyon occupies a strategic position in north-south traffic in Europe. Former capital of Gaul at the time of the Roman Empire, it is the seat of an archbishopric whose holder bears the title of primate of Gaul. Lyon became a very commercial city and a first-rate financial centre during the Renaissance. Its economic prosperity was also driven at that time by silk and printing and then by the appearance of industries including textiles, chemicals and, more recently, by the image industry.

Lyon, historically an industrial city, has hosted many petrochemical activities south of the city along the Rhône, in what is called the chemical corridor. After the departure and closure of the textile industries, it gradually refocused on high-tech sectors, such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It is also the second student city in France, with four universities and several grandes écoles. Finally, the city has preserved an important architectural heritage ranging from the Roman era to the twentieth century through the Renaissance and, as such, the districts of Old Lyon3, from the hill of Fourvière4, the Presqu’île5 and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse6 are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In 2019, Lyon is, by its population, the third municipality of France with 522,969 inhabitants, the city-center of the second urban unit with 1,685,494 inhabitants and the second attraction area of France with 2,280,845 inhabitants. It is the prefecture of the Rhône department, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the South-East defense and security zone and the headquarters of the metropolis of Lyon, which brings together 59 municipalities and 1,411,571 inhabitants in 20197. The city exerts an attractiveness of national and European importance. Its importance in the cultural, banking, financial, commercial, technological, pharmaceutical, arts and entertainment fields make it a world city of “Beta-” rank according to the GaWC ranking in 2020, comparable to Osaka, St. Petersburg or Stuttgart8. The city is also home to the headquarters of the International Agency for Research on Cancer since 1965 and Interpol since 1989.
