There are many firework festivals around Japan during summer season and these summer fireworks are called “Hanabi”. In Japanese, “Hana” means flower and “bi” means fire, so that word means “fire flowers” or “flower-shaped fire”. Hanabi were popularised and developed during the Edo period and hold cultural significance in Japan both in physical displays and metaphorically as a symbol of ephemeral beauty.

In this video, we went to the riverside to see a Japanese fireworks festival. Another attraction of Japanese firework show is the festival atmosphere that comes with them, people dressed in yukata (traditional wear / summer kimono) and streets lined by Yatai -food stalls- and game stalls. From freshly-cooked karaage fried chicken to red bean paste-filled taiyaki and other treats such as Takoyaki, Yakitori, Ikayaki and Kakigori, the snacks and desserts at festivals add the finishing touch to the magic of Japanese matsuri. Then, spectacular and magnificent fireworks color the summer night sky. It was not one of the best or biggest fireworks festivals in Japan, however, I hope you can enjoy the show!
