Umeda is the center of Kita, one of the two major downtown areas in Osaka, and generally refers to the downtown areas around Osaka Station and Umeda Station, which are the gateways to Umeda. Along with Minami around Namba and Shinsaibashi, it is the center of commerce in Osaka. It is also one of the largest office districts in western Japan with skyscrapers, and Dojima, Nakanoshima, Senba, etc. all form the central business district (CBD) of Osaka. Umeda as an administrative town name is only surrounded by Osaka Station and Midosuji, Sonezaki-dori, and the border of Fukushima Ward on the south side, but Umeda as a wide-area place name is sometimes used almost synonymously with Kita. 梅田は大阪の2大繁華街の一つであるキタの中心地であり、一般的にはその玄関口となる大阪駅・梅田駅周辺の繁華街を指す。難波・心斎橋周辺のミナミと並んで大阪における商業の中心地である。また、超高層ビルが林立する西日本最大級のオフィス街でもあり、堂島・中之島・船場などともに大阪の中心業務地区 (CBD) を構成している。行政上の町名としての梅田は大阪駅およびその南側の御堂筋、曽根崎通、福島区境に囲まれた範囲に過ぎないが、広域地名としての梅田はキタとほぼ同義に用いられることもある。ただし、曽根崎通の南側に位置し、江戸時代以来の市街地である北新地を指して梅田などと呼ぶケースは稀である。一方、曽根崎通の北側では隣駅となる中崎町駅、中津駅 (Osaka Metro)、中津駅 (阪急)付近まで梅田と呼ばれることがあり、キタやミナミ同様に地理的な範囲は明確には定義されていない。
大阪駅開業当時の1874年頃の梅田周辺は田畑や梅田墓地が広がり、豊臣秀吉が築いた大阪城周辺や、江戸時代の繁華街であった船場や堂島などから離れ、1889年の市制施行時における大阪市域からも外れた、郊外の農村地帯であった。市街地の堂島に近い場所に大阪駅を建設する計画もあったが、鉄道黎明期の当時は市街地での鉄道建設への反対運動が根強く、また神戸方面からの線路を京都方面へ直通を見越して延伸できるよう、現在地付近に建設された。その後、阪神や阪急の梅田駅といった私鉄の乗り入れや、大阪市の発展とそれに伴う郊外住宅地の拡大により、大阪市北部、通称「キタ」の鉄道交通の拠点として発展した。長距離の広域輸送においては、東海道・山陽新幹線の開業や、寝台列車の削減により[5]、新大阪駅にその座を譲ったものの、戦後はかつての大阪市中心部を凌ぐ商業・業務機能を備え、大阪最大級の都心の一つとして認識されている。
