We explored the popular Kifune Jinja Shrine, a Japanese shrine over 1,300 years old that is dedicated to the water deity. Tucked away in the northern area of Kyoto, Japan, there are 3 shrines that make up ‘Kifune Shrine’. ‘Honmiya’ (main shrine), ‘Okumiya’ (back shrine / former main shrine), and ‘Yui no Yashiro’ (middle shrine).
As we walk to each of these 3 shrines, you’ll notice that there are restaurants lining the street. These restaurants are known as ‘kawadoko’ (river-dining platforms that hang above the water), and are a long-standing summer Kyoto tradition.
We recommend setting aside an entire day to explore this area, as it is a bit of a journey to get to this area. However, it is well worth the effort!
Access: We took the Kyoto City bus to Demachiyanagi Station, then transferred onto the Eizan Railway to Kibune-guchi Station. From there, we took a short bus ride to Kifune Shrine.
