Then head to Shirakawa-go (or Shirakawa Village), a mountainous Japanese settlement and World Heritage site, that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time. Experience a traditional way of life and visit the gassho style houses (pictured) which were built around 1800 and are still standing today.
