Another day, another extended airport layover, this time courtesy of a cancelled flight from Garuda Indonesia. On this occasion though, I was prepared!
In Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport there is a capsule hotel called Digital Airport Hotel. It’s in the domestic terminal (terminal 3) on the first follow, above arrivals but below departures.
This isn’t my first time staying in a capsule hotel. The concept of capsule hotels started in Osaka, Japan and the country is renowned for them. In fact, I’ve stayed in capsule hotels in both Tokyo and Osaka and I was very pleasantly surprised.
Those were fairly basic ones made out of wood, although they still had charging ports. However, Digital Airport Hotel had much more futuristic capsules. It’s pretty obvious from the video that I was impressed. They had everything you needed for a long airport layover with a TV, headphones, multiple light settings, multiple charging ports, water, a locker for your stuff and towels so that you can take a shower as well.
What’s more…..it cost less than £15 for the night!
You get a wide range of opinions of capsule hotels. Some don’t like the idea because it’s claustrophobic. Others don’t like it because of the lack of privacy – though trust me, they are more than private enough. I completely understand why you may not like the idea, but for less than £15 for the night and as an alternative to sleeping on the floor or a bench, I really don’t think there’s a better choice. As I say in the video, I wished every airport had them.
I’d use them even if I didn’t have to sleep. Anything more than a 3 hour layover and I’d pay for a capsule. Lie down, watch some TV and relax, ready for your flight.
That’s the best thing about this particular capsule hotel. It’s the floor below departures. You can go and check your luggage in, it’s probably less than 300 steps) and then come back to the capsule until just before your flight. Get up, go through security and get on the plane.
I think they’re genius.
Japan lives in the future.
