The townscape of Kurashiki has been recognized as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings for the white walls of its residences and the willow trees lining the banks of the Kurashiki River. There has been a strong economic development in Kurashiki since the 1600s, and the region continues to maintain an atmosphere of calm and harmony.
“Traditional Boat Tour of Kurashiki Canal” is a popular tourist attraction. This boat tour allows visitors to observe the town’s white walls from a small boat along the Kurashiki River. A kimono or yukata may also be worn by visitors who wish to experience Japanese culture firsthand before strolling through the historic streets of Kurashiki. In addition to washoku (Japanese cuisine) restaurants and confection shops, visitors can experience more literal samples of Japanese culture in the Bikan Historical Quarter.
Okayama Korakuen Garden, a representation of the strength of the samurai, is regarded as one of Japan’s three greatest gardens, along with Mito City’s Kairakuen and Kanazawa City’s Kenroku-en.
