Mexico City is the sixth largest metropolitan city in the world with close to 22 million people living in it, so it’s no wonder that there is SO MUCH amazing food there. Mexico City is without a doubt one of the food capitals of the world, so I have wanted to travel there for a very long time, especially because of how much I love Mexican food. We had an amazing two week trip and we hit many of the best restaurants, taquerias, and street food stands in Mexico City (according to many experts) but we also found many places that I have not seen mentioned or highlighted in any YouTube videos about Mexico City.
The street food in Mexico City is unmatched compared to any of the countries that I’ve been to and if you know anything about me, you know that I love tacos…especially tacos al pastor, and Mexico City is the motherland when it comes to that! I highlighted a number of places in the video that specialize in Tacos al Pastor, but my favorite was El Vilsito. This taqueria was unique because they are an auto body shop by day and turn into a taqueria at night. They run about 3-4 trompos depending on the day you visit and the place is ALWAYS packed.
Now I realize that no 20 minute video…or 20 hour video for that matter, could possibly cover all of the delicious food in Mexico City and this list is obviously limited to my 14 days there and the research that I did prior to my trip. Additionally, this is just MY opinion of what the best food was on our trip and that is going to differ from other people’s opinions because food is all about preference.
With that said…my top FIVE taquerias and/or street food in Mexico City include (in no particular order) El Pescadito, Jenni’s Street Quesadillas, Los Cocuyos, Taqueria El Torito, and La Esquina Del Chilaquil. This list is obviously non-exhaustive and you’ll have to check out the video for the rest of the taquerias and street food stands we hit on our trip!
The best restaurants in Mexico City that we hit would be Nico’s, Contramar, Choza, Rosetta, and Lardo. These places are all great to go on a date to enjoy a nice dinner (or brunch in the case of Nico’s and Lardo) and we even brought our 10 month old baby to all of those spots and they were very accommodating and loved interacting with him.
One of my favorite things to do in Mexico City was our trip to Xochimilco to ride the trajineras down the ancient canals with some friends who were in town with us. I name the departure spot in the video that we were recommended by multiple locals and I highly recommend setting out for at least 3 hours to give yourself enough time to enjoy the ride and see all of the cool spots along the canals like Doll Island. Be sure to pack some drinks and food with you because the food we had out on the canals wasn’t the best and it can get expensive compared to the rest of Mexico City.
If you are looking for a great place to stay, look no further than Condesa or Roma Norte. If you are looking for more of a nightlife scene and things to do late into the night, Roma Norte might be a better choice. I found Condesa to be a beautiful quiet neighborhood that is filled with tree lined streets and TONS of delicious food stalls, coffee shops, and restaurants. I also think Condesa is more family friendly and a perfect place to stay with children because of the parks nearby with amazing playgrounds.
Overall, Mexico City was one of the best food destinations I’ve ever been to, up there with Tokyo for me, and the people were all super friendly and welcoming. I hope to return in the not so distant future!
