Miyajima, the Japanese term for “shrine island,” is the island’s official name, although it is commonly referred to as Itsukushima. This is because the island is so closely associated with its most important shrine, Itsukushima Shrine. As with the torii gate, the shrine’s main buildings are built over water. The best way to experience Miyajima is to spend the night at one of the island’s ryokans. The area is usually crowded with tourists during the day. However, at night, it becomes much quieter and more serene.
