Join us for the original presidential museum, dating all the way back to 1957. This is the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, MO, just a stone’s throw from KC.
As I mentioned, this is the first presidential museum that came from the Presidential Libraries Act of 1955. The act established a system of federally maintained libraries, and encouraged other presidents to donate their papers and historical artifacts for the public to enjoy.
Aside from this fact, Harry S. Truman had an interesting presidency. For starters, he was Vice President under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and assumed the role of President when FDR passed away in office. Truman had been kept in the dark about a lot of the happenings in the Oval Office, including the development of the atomic bomb, which Truman ended up using twice during his presidency.
And despite all of the many other things that President Truman was involved with during his reign, the dropping of the atomic bomb is arguably the most discussion worthy. In this video, we include several testimonies regarding the bomb, a few of them by people who actually experienced the bomb. Not for the faint of heart.
We try to keep things fairly neutral here. We try not to shy away from important topics that need to be discussed, but we allow you to form your own opinions. What did you think about the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan during World War II? Was it a necessary evil? Or was it too much?
Anyway, if you’re into presidential history, this is a very cool museum to visit. Check it out the next time you’re passing through Kansas City.

This was a great tour! When I heard Independence, MO, the first thought that came to mind was The Oregon Trail! I remembered that was the starting point. Regarding the ethics of the atom being dropped, at the time it was seen as saving lives on both sides since it would avoid a bloody land invasion. Nowadays, most countries would shy away from such blatant civilian collateral damage (but as we see in the news, some still don't). Thanks for a thought provoking video! 🧐
