My Japanese husband lied to me about eating Japan’s freshest seafood and I got HANGRY 😤🍣

After bears warnings and site closures lead us on lengthy detour to the northernmost point of Japan, today we’re in the popular ice-breaker ship tourist hotspot of Abashiri ready to chill out and enjoy some of Hokkaido’s famously fresh seafood low budget street food style. At just ¥500 ($3.50) for a whole kaisendon sashimi bowl fresh from the Okhotsk Sea, we can’t help but think we’ve found the best seafood street food in Japan! What *I* didn’t know was how challenging it would all prove to be..

While Abashiri is most famous for its Ryuhyo Drift Ice and ice breaker ship tours, it can be enjoyed in all seasons with cheap and delicious fresh seafood, beautiful campsites with views of Mt. Shari and Lake Abashiri, and a visit to its infamous prison. Straight from the harbor and kept icy cold, Abashiri’s kaisendon (sashimi rice bowls), uni-don (sea urchin rice bowl) and ikuradon (roe rice bowl) are ranked among the best seafood in Japan.
