There is no better place to learn about the history of Kure than at the Kure Maritime Museum (also known as the Yamato Museum), which is nothing short of Japan’s modernization story. It focuses on the lives of key people in the city, as well as the culture and industries that have shaped the modern nation, specifically shipbuilding and steelmaking.
A one-tenth scale model of the battleship Yamato (26.3 meters in length) is duplicated as accurately as possible based on original drawings, photographs, and submersible survey results. A one-tenth scale model of the battleship Yamato serves as the centerpiece of the Yamato Museum and conveys the importance of peace and industrial technology.
Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) Kure Museum exhibits related to minesweeping and submarine operations. Also, the JMSDF maintains museums related to aircraft at Kanoya, Kagoshima, and surface vessels at Sasebo, Nagasaki.
