From May to July 2022, the Alpine Club Exhibition Hall hosted a range of early alpine photographs drawn from the Club’s collection. Curated by Honorary Keeper of the Photographs Bernie Ingrams, the exhibition included works by the likes of Vittorio Sella, William Donkin, Edward Whymper and Fanny Bullock Workman. These photographs are among the earliest examples of alpine photography, with many taken at the end of the 19th century using large, plate cameras. Many were taken in the Alps, but the exhibition also included a depiction of Mount Fuji in Japan and photographs from the Karakoram.
In this video tour, Bernie discusses the works on display and picks out two of his favourite images for closer inspection.
Most of the works are available to view on the Alpine Club website, where you can also find details of how to purchase digital copies: https://bit.ly/3QyzKuK
