After the war, the remains of war casualties in Okinawa prefecture were gathered by residents at the same time as reconstruction, and mausoleums along with memorial towers were built in various places. After that, these ashes were collected and transferred to a central mausoleum constructed on behalf of the Japanese government, but in order to lay the souls of these war victims to eternal rest, the remains of these individuals were transferred in 1979 to the newly built National Okinawa War Dead Mausoleum on Mabuni Hill.

The Mausoleum holds the ashes of around more than 180,000 souls, and people keep on coming to visit it.
