Japan Van Life Ch 40: We’re quitting van life for the good life.
To celebrate New Year in Japan after 4 months of living in our self-converted van we traded our van for a taste of the high life (with a little help from some very special friends) and spent 2 nights and 3 days in one of Japan’s most expensive luxury hotels; Park Hyatt Kyoto in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto.
Designed as a luxury guesthouse with 9 stunning suites, the 5-star hotel boasts some of the best views of Kyoto City and the iconic Yasaka Pagoda and its location is perfect for exploring popular Kyoto tourist sites such as Kiyomizu-dera, the Geisha district of Gion, and countless of Kyoto’s picturesque shrines. If you’ve ever seen Lost in Translation, you might be familiar with its world-famous sister, the Park Hyatt Tokyo!
Today we’re giving you a full tour of the hotel’s gorgeous King Bed Garden View room and of Kyoto without the crowds. Come with us to see the inside of Kyoto’s best luxury hotel, see snow in the iconic historic alleyways of Ninen-zaka and Sannen-kaza, hear the bells toll at midnight from Kyoto’s most famous temple, Kiyomizu-dera, and nearby Kōdaiji Temple, and see how Japan celebrates New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day with festivals, hatsumode (first shrine visits of the year), and traditional Japanese food like toshikoshi soba (New Year’s buckwheat noodles) and osechi-ryori (traditional New Year’s cuisine, with each dish holding a different meaning from luck to longevity).
Thanks to our AMAZING friends, we saw in 2022 in the most dreamy way possible in Japan’s most beautiful hotel, and it was enough to make us *nearly* quit van life 😅❤️

Hi little YouTube family!
We know it’s been quiet over here this past week and it’s been especially hard to know what to say or do these last couple of days. We, like many of you, have been attached to our phones, scrolling, watching, reading, paralyzed and discussing what to expect next. It feels wrong to post about fun in Japan or life as normal, but we also know that many people are looking to social media as an escape, so we will continue to upload vlogs and we hope they continue provide some kind of comfort to you all. With love to you all from the van in Japan, ja ne~! 🥝🐻
Absolutely a magical and a gorgeous stay in Kyoto…thank you for always bringing "sunshine" and a smile to our faces. Take good care. 💗
Everything is fancy and then the toilet is like a spaceship lol
this was one of your most beautifully edited videos. the vibe of this one was a bit more poignant than other videos, can't put my finger on exactly why it was
Man, the crowd size difference was like night and day. But, the next day, only the gentle chirping of some birds.
The little pat on the head in the morning, also why did your little morning skit make me feel like the start of a Disney movie. Also you two are the cutest and cannot have bad luck as you two are together ❤️❤️
was all the alcohol in the cupboards complimentary with the stay and how much did u guys polish off?
Congratulations on spending the new year in such beautiful surroundings, the little taste of luxury(and warmth) really seemed to have bought so much joy to you both. Your smiles at the end said it all.
Happiness dose not cost anything 😊💓
the hotel was so fancy! was all the alcohol and chocolate free? haha
🇬🇧🇬🇧🙏🏽👍🏽🙏🏽💕❤️
Kiwi…you need a decent pair of gloves or mittens….especially after the purple thumb incident.
Morning shots of Kyoto were so worth it.
Would you do a food challenge video? Since it is well known that you guys are foodies. A head to head comp on the soba noodles or giant ramen challenge would be a great watch!
It really looked like a fun stay in Kyoto!
This one was moving, you actually made me cry a little. Thank you so much for sharing!
Just listening to the both of you being so happy puts a smile on my face! Please be safe and have loads of fun!
Both deserve this treat ❤️
What a beautiful way to celebrate new year ! I imagine you would have appreciated any kind of comfy bed in a warm room after your ascetic van life 😀 But this hotel room looks particularly nice !
You are such a lovely couple. It’s nice to watch your adventures together.
