Episode 11: We return to Australia from India and go on a road trip up the Batavia Coast of Western Australia. We start our journey in one of Australia’s best preserved 19th century towns called Greenough and just north of this Historic Settlement is the iconic leaning trees which have been buffeted by prevailing southerly winds. The trees are Eucalyptus Red River Gum and they are a popular icon visited by many travellers. It is only on the windswept Greenough Flats that the tree develops its distinctive leaning structure – growing perpendicular to the soil below. We then make our way up to Geraldton discovering the history of the largest regional city north of Perth. Learn all about the battle of HMAS Sydney II & The German Raider Kormoran off the WA coastline that remained a mystery for 66 years until researchers finally located both ships in 2008. We find out about the chilling story of the Dutch sailing ship the Batavia that was shipwrecked on the Abrolhos Islands near Geraldton in 1629, which is still Australia’s greatest cold case. We travel up to Northampton, then to Port Gregory, to visit Australia’s most photographed lake known as Hutt Lagoon or the Pink Lake.
