During the Best of Bangkok Food Tour with The Hungry Tourist (https://www.instagram.com/the.hungry.tourist/) and Puppup (https://www.instagram.com/puppup_foodlife/), one day for lunch we drove out to Kui Mong (กุ่ยหมง), a legendary restaurant that is the original restaurant in Thailand serving deep fried river shrimp (prawns).

In order to get the largest size, Puppup had to actually call the restaurant to order them one month in advance. If you just walk in you can get 400 or 600 gram shrimp probably, but the 800 gram single shrimp are hard to come by these days in Thailand.

Kui Mong (กุ่ยหมง) is very well known among Thais, mainly because most restaurant grill their river shrimp, but Kui Mong (กุ่ยหมง) is the first to deep fry them, and serve them in a ridiculously delicious oily shrimp sauce. The sauce is one of the greatest things you’ll ever taste on rice, combined with more chili garlic sauce and an alternating bite of succulent river shrimp.

They owners family are very nice, but unfortunately since it’s such a secret recipe, we weren’t able to see the cooking – so that’s why this is just a short extra Thai food video – only showing the massive deep fried Thai river shrimp and eating them.

Price – 2,000 THB ($63.44), per 800 grams shrimp

  1. I need to go on an Asian food tour. Specifically looking to hit Japan to try the best sushi and raw seafood (Uni, Chuttoro, Squid, Abalone, Sea Cucumber the whole lot!) as well as Wagyu beef, then after gonna hit Korea for the best BBQ and Kimchi, and finally Thailand for the best Pad Thai, Tom Yum and all kinds of shellfish… especially the SHRIMP! This has to be the holy trinity of Asian food lol, at least of me. I'd finish it off by heading over to China and trying some authentic Peking Duck and Shark fin soup. I know, it's not good for the ecosystem but gotta try the food meant only for emperors at least once ^^

  2. It’s probably best I don’t go to this restaurant…..I may eat this river prawn to the point of extinction

  3. يا هلا والف مرحبًا بيك Mr. Hungry Tourist 💐It’s such a pleasure seeing you here with Mark and all the Amazing crews يا ابن بلادي الحبيبه. Love you all. Enjoy in good health 🦋💕🌎👏🏻🙏🏻🕊🕊🕊

  4. Hey Mark – NOTICED YOU HAVE NOT TRIED PACIFIC ISLAND FOOD. Pacific Cuisine too is a Must & Unique in its own ways

  5. finding the rite food is not the problem. the problem is the company in which you break bread with. i have not had an interesting break bread with since the 90's. that is how mucking dull the parameters have been.

  6. It’s very rare to find in Vietnamese restaurants in America but we have a version called “tom kho tau”
