Secluded into the mountains of Tohoku’s Yamagata Prefecture in Japan, Ginzan Onsen is reminiscent of a scene from Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away”.

In this episode of Behind the Frame, we go over everything that went into place in order to get a single image. From planning, transportation, gear choice, and everything else along the way.

I hope by sharing the stories behind the shots you see on social media, you can better appreciate the effort that goes into some of your favorite images.

  1. Thank you everyone for watching. It's sometimes very difficult to convey in an Instagram post just how much effort goes on behind the scenes to get a single shot.

Like I mentioned in the video, I have many stories like this and I plan to reach into my treasure trove of footage to share these stories with you in the future.

If you want to check out the shot and inspiration for this video, you can find it here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CYBgdVWFJJs/

Again, special thanks to all my friends who put in the effort to support me in this new series. Thank you!

If there is a story behind one of my images on Instagram you would like me to share, reply with the shot in the comments below!

  2. I had goosebumps throughout this whole video! The way you shared the process but made it story-like was so magical and the videos and photos even more so!
Really really looking forward to hearing more of your stories ☺️

  3. I like how you documented your experience behind the shot, making all the extra value visible 🎉 well done

  4. Awesome video dude. I know how happy I get when I get a good photo while casually taking pics on my vacations to Japan so getting an amazing shot after so much work must be amazing. Really interesting to hear your perspective on the whole project too. Most of the time, we don't get to hear the backstory from vloggers on their projects so its good to know more without getting overly technical. Looking forward to more of these videos.

  5. Hi Victor that was a seriously impressive video, amazing production quality and storytelling. Please keep creating more.

  6. Awesome video mate, very inspiring!
It really does feel like an obsession sometimes, the lengths one goes to to get that shot. But its so worth it!

  7. That was a great story, really interesting to hear you talk through it and what a result with the final image!

  8. This was amazing! Not many people think about the process and all the planning that go behind the shots and how much luck can also come into play. And the cost to shoot to. 😓 This was demonstrated perfectly how often we spend so much time planning just for THAT ONE SHOT! Great job!

  9. It's amazing to see how big effort a great photographer like you put into creating a masterpiece.
Thank you so much for sharing the process and the story behind your incredible picture!

  10. Loved this video and learning about your method and preparation. The final shot is definitely worth much more than a thousand words; it gives me inspiration to paint. Looking forward to more from you in the future. Be well

  11. Amazing video, loved you telling the story behind your shots, it's a great idea! Would love to see more in the future

  12. Great video Victor! You knocked both the video and the photography right out of the park! I really enjoyed the story telling in this video, it really delved into a portion of the creative process that isn't discussed in a lot of Japan videos. Detailing the backstory involved in getting a small window of opportunity to capture something exceptional.

  13. Awesome video, very inspiring!! Very curious which flash you used to capture the snow so nicely! And do you also happen to have a landscape shot of the same picture? Your final shot makes me want to know more about the area.
Might have to rethink my route for my next Japan trip (was planning to go down south… now i'm not so sure anymore :p )

  14. Once again, just perfection. Thank you Victor for sharing this story of your travel to Tohoku. I do remember you did post some awesome shots. It was informative and capturing at the same time. Looking forward to many more.

  15. Insane that the people in the photo weren't blurred even w/ 2 secs of shutter speed. How did he even do that?

  16. I really enjoyed this video. It's a great idea for a series to tell the story behind the photos. Keep it up! One question, when you do a long exposure with the flash, does the flash just fire at the end; or at the beginning? Or does it stay on the whole time? I've never done that before, so I'm just curious about it.

  17. Great video mate, a true master at work. I look forward to the day you bring out your own photography book.

  18. Contender for Anime Movie of the year!

It felt kinda surreal watching this video. Nicely done!

  19. Great job with the video and the reveal was so worth it. Thank you for sharing the amount of work that goes into getting the shot. I'd love to see and hear more of your process!

  20. beautiful video and beautiful story. really hope to see more of these. it is so interesting to see the whole process behind the pictures you take

  21. I think this is a really cool idea for a series. How much work it can take to get the shot is not something I really think about. Having some background and context to what it takes to capture a photo is a interesting idea.

  22. Dinner vs the pursuit of the shot … sometimes you go hungry. I filmed Ginzan in 2020, no snow. Went back and finished up an episode last month. Snow. Felt the same way. Without that movement, magical slow fall of white snow onto those Taisho era buildings, it loses much of its romanticism. Ah, couldn’t you get the JR East Pass Tohoku Area? ¥20,000 for 5 days of Shinkansen. It’s a gem! Thanks for sharing the experience.

  23. Thank you for sharing your talent. This is my first video of yours I am watching. Came to your channel from Sharla’s channel. I’m a Subscriber now can’t wait to see more.
