Japan Trip: Nishiki Market busy lined with specialty shops, Japan, Kyoto 047
Nishiki Market (Nishiki Ichiba) is a narrow, five block long shopping street lined with more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Called as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”, this active retail market specializes in all things food related, like fresh seafood, produce, knives and kitchenware, and is a great place to walk around and find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood and sushi, that can rarely get in any other area of Japan.
Nishiki Market has a delightful but busy atmosphere that is attractive to those who are interested in the variety of culinary delights that Kyoto is famous for. The stores lined throughout the market vary in size from small narrow stalls to larger two story shops. Most specialize in a specific type of food, and almost everything sold at the market is locally produced and procured.
