Japan Trip: Enjoying Spring along the Okazaki Canal, Kyoto 114

Visitors in Kyoto during the cherry blossom, or sakura, will find Okazaki Canal to be a popular sakura viewing spot. Okazaki Canal is the canal connecting Kamo River to the Lake Biwa Canal network. The canal is located just outside Heian Shrine.

Visitors can opt to view the sakura of Okazaki Canal via boat, if they wish. The traditional Japanese-styled boat will carry its passengers down the canal for about 3 kilometers or 25 minutes. Absent of traffic, passengers can enjoy the beauty of spring in this serene atmosphere. During the sakura season, there are tours in the evening as well, with sakura being lit up to show their beauty in a new light.

Though prior reservations are not required, please note the boat rides are quite popular and there may be a long line during the cherry blossom season. During this season there is a boat every 15 to 30 minutes. The fee is 1000 yen per person.
