Graz has a lot to offer visitors with its medieval Main Square, renaissance and baroque architecture, narrow streets, restaurants and shops. It is the capital city of Styria and Austria’s second-largest city after Vienna. A funicular railway connects the main town to Schlossberg Park and Gardens, where attractive cafes look out over the town to the distant mountains. Trains serving the main station connect with most of the country’s major population centers, modern trams provide regular services from the station and the town and its suburbs. An unusual Fairy-tale railway can be found deep under the town where a miners train takes passengers on a mythical journey through a labyrinth of tunnels set up to represent scenes from famous children’s stories. Finally we take a short bus ride to Stainz, home of the Stainzerbahn steam railway for an evening dining train to Preding-Wieselsdorf.

The tour was organised by the Railway Touring Company and this video was filmed between 21st and 26th September 2019

  1. Another awesome video. My friend lives in Austria has been asking me to find her more videos on Austria. She will love this she has family in Vienna 😉 Thanks for sharing with us. God bless you always in your travels.

  2. Hello Tim! Some information about your video. Graz is the second largest city in Austria. Coming to Vienna right away. On the Schloßberg you saw a musician at 10:30. Everyone knows him here. His name is Pfuisi Hans. If you want to see more of him, go to YouTube and type in "Steirermusi am Schlossberg". He can play really well. Now to the Stainzer Railway. Every year there is the "bottle train" (Flascherlzug). In the twenties there was a miracle doctor there. He could read people's diseases from the urine. His name was "Höller Hansl". Back then people came to him in large numbers by train. Everyone had a small bottle of urine in their luggage. Hence the name "bottle train". Well Tim, now you've learned something from the Austrian tradition. Best regards from Hans from the Mühlviertel.

  3. I heard the town of Graz in Austria disappeared once, when someone turned up with a lawnmower! (Graz – Grass…. the pronunciation of the 'Z' as 'TS', close to 'SS') LOL

  4. Now, this was interesting! How steep is that hill at 13:35, and how do they get the funicle to climb that? There must be some wire system or some kind of magic? 🙂

Have fun and keep up the good work!

  5. Doch sehr schönes Video, Tim! Ganz gut gemacht! Yeah, I'm showing off a bit here! A great video you have here. But of course you'll note I had to get a couple of comical lines in somewhere!

  6. Hello Tim, old Graz is beautiful city located in beautiful place. The funicular also its attraction. But I did not know that there were such cool caves organized for tourists as an attraction with small train underground. 🙂 Nice is your ride and video, thanks. Chuck

  10. Also a very nice video and interesting to see the own home from the eyes of a traveller.
I personally always make individual reports from the different topics. But also a long report has its charm.
It is a pity that the Stainz 2 does not drive any more – nobody knows whether it will do that again.

  11. I don't know how but those supermodern trams fit perfectly with historical cities, like, for example, Sevilla, and, as we see in this video, Graz.

  13. Greats heavens, the joys of Graz! Long time since I'd been there, 1973 on the way back from the Arab/Israeli War as a press photographer, traveling in a long distance hippie bus we finely stopped in Graz for food. It has changed somewhat since '73. You have inspired me, sir. Time to dig out the old photos and hit the photo scanner …
