In this episode, I explore Kashiihama, Higashi-ku, and Island City with Kaoru Suehiro, a prominent architect in Fukuoka. Kashiihama is the site of Nexus World, an ambitious apartment complex constructed in 1991 with projects by six internationally acclaimed architects: one Japanese, Osamu Ishiyama, and five non-Japanese architects Oscar Tusquèts, Christian de Portzamparc, Marc Mack, Steven Holl, and Rem Koolhaas. Suehiro lives inside one of these units, so in addition to his description of the architecture, we’ll hear what it’s like to live there. From there, we’ll walk across a bridge to Island City, a massive development built on reclaimed land in Hakata Bay. An extension connecting the island to the Fukuoka Urban Expressway was completed just weeks ago. A new shopping mall and hotel and more popped up last year. We will walk the green and grassy multidimensional Grin-grin by Toyo Ito and the Island Tower Sky Club triple towers. It will be a long but interesting walk. Anyone interested in architecture or city planning will be sure to enjoy this one. Join us in the live chat with your questions and comments.

Kyushu Live
PATREON(ファンがクリエイターを直接支援できるサービス)でも登録しているので応援してね!https://www.patreon.com/kyushulive

Hi everyone! Just got home after today's long walk and wanted to say a BIG thanks to today's guest Kaoru Suehiro who gave us a fantastic tour today. He dropped so much information that I'm going to watch it myself! If you didn't watch it live and have questions or comments – leave them here! Thanks
Suehiro sensei! pls bring us to Kumamoto Artopolis or some building for earthquake. We went to see a lot of architectures, but not enought! and…. maybe pls visit the building that you design too……
What a great guest! It's amazing how beautiful urban Japan can be when cinder blocks and green wire fences are not ubiquitous.
Another great show, Nick. Thanks to you and Mr. Suehiro. This area of Fukuoka these days is unimaginable to us.
A private block of buildings @_@?!
