The Hawai'i Drive In was interesting and has as expected, a "Hawai'i-themed" menu rather than "authentic" food found in Hawai'i. The food looked tasty but is more typically what Japanese/Okinawan people might see and like to eat in Hawai'i and made into their own versions of plates with their IMAGE of Hawaiian food that is suited to the tastes of people in Japan. Especially for breakfast — "Hamburg" with a sunny-side-up egg (half of a loco moco) with ketchup and a shoyu-based dipping sauce, pancakes, and salad, are definitely not a combination you'll find anywhere in Hawai'i, but it seems a logical deluxe "Western" breakfast in Japan.
Shinichi's choice does look more like a Hawai'i mixed plate lunch but with more typically Japanese rather than Hawai'i additions like the sauce on the hamburger steak. Like Shinichi, I automatically think hamburger steak comes with gravy (I wonder why Japanese cooks can't make brown gravy?) and I don't think there's any local eatery in Hawai'i that would serve it with a topping of ketchup or a shoyu-based or even teriyaki sauce. The typical Japanese salad is uncommon on plate lunches in Hawai'i (we might have a little shredded cabbage underneath the meat or cole slaw in a cup), and the spaghetti and little sausage are also reminiscent of "okosama ranchi" (kids' lunch) to me. I would eat everything that is served on those plates, but I don't think it would make me nostalgic or think I'm eating local dishes from Hawai'i.
The food at the other restaurants also looks great — You can see they, too, are dishes created by local people in Okinawa influenced by the American presence there. I think that's why Shinichi finds the flavors "familar but new." Mahalo for sharing these wonderful iconic restaurants unique to Okinawa!
It looked like chow hall food. It takes me back.
I loved this video! I really liked the old school look of all of the places you went to! You must be stuffed! lol
I've been to that same Jet back in 2016. Too bad you didn't get the goya burger, it's really good. I had to get the goya burger because I don't know of any other place that has it.
Mahalo for this video!
My mouth is watering
Is maple syrup a big thing in Japan? Do they grow sugar maple trees and tap the trees?
Hey shinichi you ever had the bbq fries in varsity at L&L? Do they have that tariyaki fries in Tokyo? Reason I ask because I remember fries being in that paper packet
Pokemon celebrated the opening of a Pokemon Center in Okinawa with a cute animation with a growlithe. Would like to visit a Pokemon Center one of these days 😅
reminds me of school lunch with the rankings you´d have ¨hot lunch, cold lunch, and then the fries (The best one of all until they ¨got healthy¨) we like the orange juice from Japan its so good! Monday i´ll have to get some …
I'm not gay but i want a Satoshi..good video guys
and i would make him call me ononion
I don't really understand why some are called "drive ins". A "drive in" is a type of restaurant where you don't get out of your car. You typically order from a sign post, or someone comes to your car window to take your order and deliver the food.
only bad thing in japan is the barely cooked bacon
You guys have absolutely out done yourselves on this video love it so much!
Psatoshi got 5 french fries lol. That wouldn't work here in New Zealand. More vegetarian please, so much meat 😵💫
Great video! Absolutely loved the nostalgic theme! 💕
I been there i love it
I like the old skool style of that place!!! 👍🏻🤙🏻
月2回くらいにシーサイドのタコスボールとスープ食べに行きます😁🤙タコスボールおすすめ🥇
A very unique breakfast plate with items that I've never seen on breakfast plates before such as a hamburger steak and soup and fried shrimp. It looked delicious. And I'm not a breakfast person but I would give that a try
It's midnight and you two are making my mouth water….I hate you lol.
You can pretty much put “deep-fried something” in front of me for breakfast, and I will never complain.
The breakfast you both had looks so amazing!!!!
Love seeing you guys really enjoying the food. Makes all your trips special for us to see
just marvellous! Jackie's looked very familiar to me; i wonder if another Travel person reviewed it? Maybe Solo Travel Japan…
Oishi sou!! XOXO
There's a taco restaurant in my city called Tako, so I'm pleased to hear Japan has long been on the reverse of that pun.
Hey Guys! GREAT video! I went to Okinawa in June 2011 and really want to go back….just not in June (too hot)! I miss the food, the people, the beaches, and yes, the scenery! If not for the Japanese signage and little cars going in the opposite direction, I'd swear I was in Hawaii! To me, Okinawa is like if Japan and Hawaii had a baby. While the food is not authentic local Hawaii food, much of what we eat in Hawaii okazuyas are very much Okinawan in origin such as the thick, sweet tempura, shoyu pork, and stir fry dishes with Spam.
Interesting but when I visited Okinawa I ate much more healthy food. This was virtually all fried food with a lot of meat!
Drive In Hawaii was definitely nostalgic Yummy Jackie's steak. Satoshi, my mouth watered watching you eat. Thanks Shinichi and Satoshi.
Could the drink remind you of the orange drink Tang? 🤔
The cat wanted a nibble 😂
The Sea Side Drive In was influenced by the military after the war. Their specialty soup was based on the American cream soup and as Okinawa is so adept at doing they made it their own.
everything looked delicious. I wish I wasn't so sick the last two times I went back to Okinawa. thank you for sharing your enjoyment of the food and showing the beautiful drives.
Thanks, guys, for another delicious video. I love that the Okinawan plate lunches have the characteristic Japanese small portions of many foods but with a fusion of Japanese and Western flavors and ingredients. So interesting! Even though I don't eat meat, those burgers from Jef made my mouth water. Yum! The shady park was such a nice respite from the sun, and the kitty made me smile. ♥♥
Oooh Im so hungry now hahaha loved this video!
Okinawa looks absolutely chill.
Taco Meatballs actually sounds sort of amazing. Who ever came up with that idea is a hero.
Great video!!!
Woooow, what an epic video! We only see you enjoying all this delicious looking food, but I am very much aware that there must be a lot of hard work behind it. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us!
The taco meat balls look good, but i be they’d be even better if you had some salsa and sour cream or guacamole to dip them in.. yummy! 😋
Excellent video as always, but i really enjoyed this one even more. Maybe because I’ve had a very bad luck day…and this was my highlight. Made me forget about all the crud i dealt with from morning to evening.. LoL
I will be checking out that steakhouse and Jef’s when I’m in Okinawa!!!! Everything looked extremely delicious.
✌🏻 💕 😊
Hope you both get better soon, lots of ❤️ from Southern California!
This is great! I used to live in Okinawa so very natsukashi! Hope you will get to try the famous spit roasted garlic stuffed chicken somewhere on the coastal road nr Nakagusuku Castle. Hopefully it's still there. Yummy!!
Nom nom nom
The steak came with 5-6 fries? Lol 😆

Greetings from Singapore. Enjoy your video. Love to come back to Japan for vacation. May I know for tourists without our own transport and have no driving licence how can we get to this place by public transport.
