NAPA VALLEY – Welcome to the beautiful Napa Valley, California – one of the premiere winery destinations in the United States! Today we have the special opportunity to go on the Wine Train, a historical railroad journey that’s been restored as a gourmet food experience. Iโ€™m going to share with you a little behind the scenes of what goes into the Wine Train, and all the delicious food on board!

Again, thank you to Visit California (and Visit Napa Valley) for sponsoring my trip.

We arrived early and headed to the commissary to learn a little about what happens behind the scenes of the Wine Train. It was also a great opportunity to learn a little about the history of the Wine Train and how it was established and later restored, and converted into a gourmet meal experience and what it is today. We saw a little of the prep in the kitchen and then some of the chefโ€™s loading their ingredients onto the train for the lunch ride.

When the time came, we boarded the train, and first sat in the lounge to enjoy a drink and appetizer. For appetizers today we had a tray of cheeses and fruits. After the train traveled from Napa to St. Helena, it then turns around and heads back. We then headed over to the main dining car for lunch. In the kitchen things were buzzing – unlike a restaurant where guests arrived staggered, on the wine train, everyone is there and ready to eat at the same time. So the kitchen car is a frenzy at peak time. Yet as soon as all the orders are ready, itโ€™s immediately calm. It was quite unique to see. For lunch we tried the tenderloin and the herb roasted chicken.

Definitely the Wine Train is not only about the food, but really about the atmosphere, the classic heritage of the train cars and decorations, and the gorgeous changing scenery of Napa Valley. I thought it was an incredible experience in California.

We took the Gourmet Express train for lunch and depending on season and situation, prices can fluctuate between $265 – $325 per person. ๐Ÿš‚ Wine Train: https://www.winetrain.com/

  1. Iโ€™m from Sonoma county literally next town over !! I have been wanting to do this for so long but the dress up theme every year I believe they come up with themes and itโ€™s like a murder mystery wine tour.

  2. Incredible, I'm here in San Francisco now and was told told about this train. For Dinner this train is already booked for most of May but I'm about to book in one of the few open slots

  3. Come to South Pacific and taste different kinds of local foods from the islanders, cheers from Vanuatu ๐Ÿ˜„

  5. I enjoyed the review but you are in Napa on the Napa Wine Train for 3 hours and only had 2 glasses of wine? Thatโ€™s criminal!

  6. Iโ€™m a big fan of Mark! This is the second time this has really bothered me, and I wonder if Iโ€™m being too sensitive, or if anybody else feels the same way, or if Iโ€™m missing something. I would love to be wrong! I understand he has a job to do for the camera, which he does very well! But it seems like he eats half the meal before his wife and child have even taken a bite of theirs. Itโ€™s like they have to sit around and wait till he digs in, indulges, comments, and makes all of those wonderful sounds of culinary pleasure. It just doesnโ€™t feel right to me they have to wait for what seems like a long time to enjoy THEIR food. Wife and child must be very patient people to have to sit there while he has those culinary orgasms, finishes half his meal while the plates are still untouched, or worse still heโ€™s tried their food and they havenโ€™t even had a chance to taste it! Someone please tell me Iโ€™m over reacting or missing something.

  7. Hey Mark I've been on that Wine Train, and my old boss operated that train, we both Engineers for Southern Pacific Railroad now the called Union Pacific RR. I think I will take another trip on the Wine Train. Thanks

  8. I feel that if the swine train added a commuter track and fed people in transit short order style they would make money hand over fist. The cars are seldom full otherwise. But catering to the hipster crowd which is under exploited there, it could be a hit. But alas.

  9. We took that train last month. The amount of food you were given was 3-4 times what our trip was given. They had to know you were coming.

  10. Top shelf wine and fine dining- that's what Napa Valley is all about.
Oh, don't forget the hot air balloon rides!
We, Calistoga Coach, are glad to see the world-traveling food guru in our neck of the woods. Welcome Mark (and your lovely family)
I hope you had a memorable visit to the wine country.

  11. I bet MICAH See's so much food ,that he ONLY EATS certain things, him being a very young little boy.

  12. pity they had to settle for a freight engine and not a passenger train engine.

  13. Ofc Mexicans in the kitchen making some delicious food for all to eat. America would be so lame without the huge diversity of people from all over the world ๐ŸŒŽ
