This video includes four tips that should make your Shinkansen experience easier, cheaper, or more convenient.

If you’re looking for information about how to purchase a JR Pass or how to ride/buy tickets for the Shinkansen without a pass, see my other videos:

JR PASS

RIDING THE SHINKANSEN

PEAK SEASON/BUSIEST TIMES OF THE YEAR
– Mid December to Mid January
– Mid March to Mid May
– Mid July to the end of August
– It’s also advisable not to travel non-reserve during any holidays that fall outside of this range.

**Also remember that, for peace of mind, if you don’t care about having more space in your row and don’t want to take the chance, just go ahead and get a reserved seat. If you have a JR Pass, it won’t cost anything extra.

  1. I am traveling around Japan early November. I know Obon and Golden Week being extremely busy times, but they are long finished. Is there anything on during November I should keep in mind when booking tickets for the Shinkanzen?

  2. In early November, my wife and I will be taking the early morning KODAMA train from Kyoto to Toyohashi (and returning the afternoon same day). Are weekdays or weekends more crowded? Should we buy a reserved or non-reserved seat? Thank you in advance.

  3. What's the max luggage size which will fit the overhead space. WIll a medium suitcase (68cm x 45 cm x 25cm) fit overhead

  4. Hi, thanks for your video great info. I will be traveling to Japan and getting the JR Pass, I will have 2 large luggages (50 pounds each) would it be better to get the green pass? I am concerned that I will not have room for my luggage in the standard class area. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
