Another day another hike! Everyone loves to say Sasebo is a “Nature Lovers Paradise” and what can I say, its true! Sure it’s the middle of winter, but we are lucky to enjoy all four season here in Japan even if that means things are a bit dead this time of year. I can only imagine how beautiful this hike would have been had we had a clear day during the spring.
This hike is in Saga Prefecture just outside of Takeo. Saga is such a beautiful prefecture and is the most lush and green during the late spring/summer. I have even said it might be my favorite prefecture in all of Japan! Be careful not to go too late in the summer though as the summers down here near Sasebo are pretty brutal. Early May would be absolutely perfect.
This hike wasn’t challenging from a fitness perspective, but there were a lot of stairs at the start. If you are interested in hiking in Japan this is just something that becomes the norm. Most hikes start with a very steep incline and usually continue that way all the way up to the top. This hike had a bit of a ridgeway walk so there were some brakes from the stairs!
We only saw a handful of people this whole day, I can’t speak to what it will be like when the weather gets a little nicer and the trees and grass are back to their beautiful lush green, but I love a nice secluded hike!

Hijiridake Observatory (Can’t drive here, but it will be at the top of the stairs at the start of the hike):

Oni Observatory (End point of the hike, also have to walk up to this even if you park close by):

Park at the bottom of the Oni Observatory (Can drive and park here. There is a large parking lot!)
