This is a video about Chinatown in Yokohama, the biggest Chinatown in Japan and also in East Asia.
Japan ended its Sakoku(locked country) in 1853, and Yokohama became one of the ports opened to foreign trades in 1859. The Origin of this Chinatown did not look like the current. The place started as a foreign settlement, many Chinese came to work for trading to get a settled life, but also western counties’ people even Japanese lived there for the trading work. After the Great Kanto Earthquake happened in 1923, Chinatown got damaged like other cities in the Kanto area. After the earthquake, people rebuilt the city back to normal, but WW2 started and the Chinatown was attacked and damaged again. After the war, Chinatown started growing again and that is the official time called “Chinatown”.
It is said that more than 20 million people visit this Chinatown in a year. Chinatown is a huge destination for people looking for Chinese restaurants, palmistry, gift shops, Chinese-style temples. This district is about 500 square meters, and there are about 500 shops in there. A lot of attractions are waiting for you.
Chinatown is also close to Yamashita Park, just a couple minutes’ walking distance.
Access to Chinatown: JR Ishikawa-Cho Station or Minatomirai Line Motomachi-Chukagai Station less than 5 minutes from both stations.
