SHRINE ISLAND
Miyajima is an island on the western part of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, located in northwest Hiroshima Bay. The island is widely known as Miyajima, which means “shrine island” in Japanese. Designated as one of the three great scenic places in Japan, Miyajima’s breathtaking scenery consists of three elements: the Itsukushima Shrine, the sea in the foreground and the mountains in the background. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for it’s iconic torii gates.
Every August, this spectacular island comes alight with the Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival. While this festival may not may not be Japan’s largest or most popular, the setting is second to none.
