My mother was born and raised here on Koyoshima. My mother lived on the island until she graduated from junior high school.
Koyoshima is a small island located next to Yoshima Island on the Great Seto Bridge.
Also, like Yoshima, Koyoshima was an island from which good quality stone could be extracted.

However, as a result of the extraction of those stones, the original landscape of this island is gone.

When I was in elementary school, my mother and brother and I played on this beach together.
In the 1980s, a liner called Sen-to-maru(千当丸) operated from Sakaide Port to Koyoshima Island.
I have fond memories of going to Koyoshima every summer vacation with my mother and brother on that Sen-to-maru.

Since Sen-to-maru does not exist today, in order to visit Koyoshima, you must arrange a boat on your own or join a tour organized by Sakaide City several times a year.
For the filming of this video, I rented a pleasure boat and maneuvered it myself to land on this island.

This tree is the only remaining original landscape on Koyoshima.
The building under this tree is the island’s community center.
According to my mother, “This tree is the only one that has not changed”.
One family living on the island had a private generator that provided electricity for the entire island.
In those days, only this community center had a television set, and my mother used to look forward to watching it.

In fact, “AKEBI,” which I used as my nickname, is my mother’s maiden name.
Mother’s father (my grandfather) died in an accident caused by blasting while quarrying on this Koyoshima.
This accident happened when my mother was 2 years old. Therefore, my mother has no memory of my grandfather.
I also have only seen my grandfather in pictures that my grandmother had.
Koyoshima holds many memories for my family.

I dedicate this video to my grandfather and grandmother who were the AKEBI family.
