The Kyoto Gion Festival, formerly known as the Gion Goryoe until the Meiji era, is celebrated at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto’s Higashiyama-ku neighborhood. The Gion Festival has been a summer tradition in Kyoto since the Joukan era (Jougan era). “Takayama” will return to the festival for the first time in 196 years on March 24. The Takayama Preservation Society, a group of local residents, held a “Hiki-zome (Beginning of towing),” a trial pull of the float, in Kyoto City on March 20. The Takayama has been decorated with textiles and other ornaments, giving it a glamorous appearance.
